At River City Family Dentistry, our dentists and dental hygienists often use dental radiographs, better known as dental X-rays, to enhance patient care. Dental x-rays allow us to visualize more of your teeth, jaw, and mouth, which helps us detect problems in their earliest stages—which can save you lots in terms of time, money, and energy!
Conditions Detected on Dental X-Rays
Our Louisville dentist team uses dental x-rays to diagnose and manage a number of oral health conditions, including:
- Tooth abscess (infection)
- Tooth decay
- Bone loss
- Oral tumors
- Jaw malocclusions and developmental abnormalities
Safety of Dental X-Rays
We only use dental x-rays when they’re necessary to support your or your loved one’s plan of care. We also use precautions, such as offering patients lead aprons, to minimize radiation exposure.
The good news is dental x-rays are considered safe and produce a low level of radiation—about the same amount as what you’re exposed to in a typical day from the surrounding environment.
When Should I Get Dental X-Rays?
When and how often you need dental x-rays depends on individual factors like your age, disease risk, medical and dental history, and dental exam results. If you’re a new patient, we may also recommend a full mouth series to establish a good “baseline” assessment.
